ChipEncoder

Overview

The ChipEncoder is a miniature surface‑mount reflective optical encoder designed to deliver high‑accuracy motion feedback in applications where traditional encoders are too large, too costly, or mechanically impractical. Its chip‑sized footprint enables integration directly onto customer electronics, reducing system size and cost while supporting automated manufacturing processes. The device is RoHS‑compliant and well‑suited for OEMs producing 500 units or more annually.

Performance and Compatibility

Measuring just 7 mm × 11 mm, the ChipEncoder fits into extremely tight spaces while providing significantly higher resolution than competing devices—up to 1,000× more. It offers 3,000 to 327,000 quadrature counts per revolution, or 10 µm to 1 µm per quadrature count (2,500 to 25,000 counts per inch). A three‑channel differential output with index ensures compatibility with standard motion‑control electronics, and a single model supports both linear and rotary configurations.

Manufacturing Benefits

The ChipEncoder is engineered for automated, high‑volume production. It is compatible with pick‑and‑place and reflow soldering processes, and requires no post‑assembly alignment, reducing manufacturing time and cost. For applications requiring higher resolution, EMI shielding, or cable‑based connectivity, alternative MicroE encoder families are available.

Alternative Solutions

For higher performance (up to 67 million counts) or EMI‑shielded designs with cable and connector, consider miniature
Mercury encoders; for applications requiring cut‑to‑length tape scales or the highest resolution and accuracy, consider
Mercury II encoders.
